Work is progressing rapidly in Anbar Governorate on the "Al-Bahia Corniche" project in the Al-Baghdadi district, considered one of the most prominent strategic projects aimed at transforming the region's tourism landscape.
The project, which stretches along the banks of the Euphrates River, is not merely a modern recreational space, but also a link between urban development and ancestral heritage, by reviving the historic waterwheels that once adorned the riverbanks.
The Director of Water Resources in Anbar, Jamal Awda Samir, confirmed to the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that "the Al-Bahia Corniche project in the Al-Baghdadi district is a significant strategic and recreational project aimed at developing the banks of the Euphrates River and reviving the region's heritage and tourism." Samir added, "The project is being implemented on the right bank of the Euphrates River in the Al-Bahya area of Al-Baghdadi district. It spans approximately 510 meters and is being carried out in two phases. The project includes the construction of a stone revetment, promenades, gardens, and green spaces, as well as the restoration of five traditional waterwheels distributed across two sections of the project."
He continued, "The restoration of these waterwheels is due to their historical and cultural significance in the upper Euphrates region, stretching from the districts of Hit to Al-Qaim. Waterwheels were once widespread and were used in the past to irrigate agricultural lands before the advent of electric and fuel-powered agricultural pumps."
