Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a ceasefire initiative proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump for a three-day truce.

Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters that Russia had approved Trump's proposal for a ceasefire from May 9 to May 11, alongside a prisoner exchange with Kyiv under a "1,000 for 1,000" formula.

Ushakov said the initiative followed the recent conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump, adding that the United States had been in contact with Kyiv during the talks.

He added that the Kremlin stressed the importance of coinciding the initiative with the 81st anniversary of Victory Day over Nazism.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also announced that Ukraine had accepted Trump's ceasefire initiative with Russia.
