Secretary-General of Asaib Ahl Al-Haq, Sheikh Qais Al-Khazali, on Sunday stressed the need for parliament to assume its national and legislative responsibilities to ensure justice for farmers.
According to a statement by his media office received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Al-Khazali received in his Baghdad office the head of the Farmers’ Associations Union, Wissam Saleh Al-Wutaifi, and his accompanying delegation, where recent developments and the challenges faced by farmers during their peaceful protests were discussed.
Al-Khazali expressed deep concern and strong condemnation over the mistreatment of farmers, stressing that they represent a fundamental pillar in building the national economy and ensuring food security in Iraq.
He emphasized that the Parliament must take serious steps to protect farmers’ constitutional rights and develop real solutions to their accumulated problems.
Al-Khazali called for an urgent and transparent investigation into the violations against protesting farmers and for holding those responsible accountable in accordance with the law, in a way that restores trust between citizens and state institutions.
He also stressed the importance of safeguarding the right to peaceful protest and rejecting any excessive use of force, noting that expressing demands is a constitutional right that must not be infringed upon.
He urged the Iraqi government to adopt a clear and comprehensive policy to address farmers’ demands and guarantee their economic and social rights, contributing to strengthening the agricultural sector and achieving self-sufficiency.
He added that “standing with farmers is standing with Iraq’s future, food security, and economic stability,” calling for joint official and public efforts to support them and meet their legitimate demands.
