The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, congratulated the Kurdish Press Day on Wednesday, stressing that a free press is an effective partner in establishing the foundations of good and fair governance.
In a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Barzani said, "On the 128th anniversary of the publication of the newspaper 'Kurdistan' by Prince Miqdad Midhat Badirkhan, and the 28th anniversary of the founding of the Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate, I extend my warmest congratulations to all journalists and media professionals in the Kurdistan Region, wishing them continued success."
It added: “On this occasion, we reaffirm our firm and unwavering commitment to protecting freedom of the press and freedom of expression, as they are fundamental pillars of democracy and a developed civil society,” stressing “the continuation of work to provide a suitable working environment free from all restrictions on media work, in a way that guarantees the right to access information and ensures the professional immunity of journalists.”
