Qamishli (Hatha Al-Youm) – A media controversy has emerged after an al-Hol camp detainee appeared in contradictory roles across several Arab television networks, prompting accusations of a coordinated media effort to rehabilitate former Islamic State members.
The individual appeared in footage broadcast by Al Jazeera describing himself as a “Syrian civilian” with no links to ISIS. He later surfaced on the Syrian platform Sada+ identifying himself as a “doctor.” Archived video obtained from the al-Furat network, however, shows the same individual previously operating as an ISIS fighter.
Kurdish media observers and local activists accuse regional outlets, including Al Jazeera, Al Hadath and Al Arabiya, of promoting a narrative aimed at softening the public image of al-Hol detainees and reintroducing them into Syrian and Arab society as civilians.
According to the critics, the coverage seeks to undermine Kurdish forces while downplaying the past involvement of detainees in violence in areas such as Suwayda, Sheikh Maqsoud, Raqqa and Tabqa. They argue that portraying former ISIS members as victims amounts to indirect media sponsorship, enabling their reintegration without legal accountability.
