Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Interior Minister Rêber Ahmed met with the newly appointed United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Dr. Barham Salih, on Monday to discuss the pressing humanitarian challenges facing internally displaced persons (IDPs) and asylum seekers in the Kurdistan Region.
During the meeting, described by Ahmed as "valuable," the two officials reviewed the current conditions of displacement camps and the integration of asylum seekers within the region. The Kurdistan Region currently hosts a significant population of refugees and IDPs, putting strain on local resources despite international aid.
Minister Ahmed congratulated the former Iraqi President on his new role at the helm of the UNHCR, emphasizing the importance of Salih's appointment during a period of global humanitarian instability.
"We congratulated him on his new role, wishing him every success in this vital mission," Ahmed said in a statement on social media platform X. He further reiterated the KRG's stance, stating that the government "remains committed to providing support and protection to displaced communities."
The meeting signals a potential strengthening of cooperation between Erbil and the UN agency, leveraging Salih's deep political experience and familiarity with the region's complex demographic and security dynamics.
