Japan is experiencing an unprecedented heatwave, according to authorities, which has led to the deaths of at least 14 people in the past week. Hundreds have been hospitalized due to heat exhaustion and sunstroke, prompting the Fire and Disaster Management Agency to describe the exceptional heatwave as a "disaster."
International media outlets, in a report followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), stated that Tokyo alone saw 453 people hospitalized in a single day for treatment of heat-related complications. This is the highest number recorded in the capital since data collection began in 2010, coinciding with the highest number of emergency calls received by emergency services since at least 1963.
In the capital, with a population of nearly 14 million, one death was reported, while four people are in critical condition and 18 others are in serious condition, affected by the heat wave that authorities have blamed on global climate change. The severe effects have extended to other areas, such as Aichi Prefecture, which alone saw 116 people hospitalized in a single day.
Several areas in Japan recorded temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, with Hamamatsu in Shizuoka Prefecture topping the list at 41.1 degrees Celsius, followed by Toyota City at 40.8 degrees Celsius, and Kuana at 40.7 degrees Celsius.
