The Border Forces Command said on Tuesday that it had arrested 44 Asian nationals who attempted to cross the country's borders illegally in the provinces of Duhok and Wasit.
In a statement followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the command said the arrests were carried out in separate operations as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal border crossings and smuggling.
It said personnel from the 2nd Battalion of the 1st Border Brigade and the support unit at the Zurbatiyah border crossing, under the 20th Border Brigade, apprehended the migrants after they attempted to enter Iraq illegally within the administrative boundaries of Duhok and Wasit provinces.
The command added that official arrest reports had been prepared and the necessary legal procedures had been taken against those detained.
