Baghdad –INA

Minister of Water Resources, Muthanna al-Tamimi, said on Tuesday that the government would take strict legal measures against those responsible for polluting the country's rivers.

Al-Tamimi told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that the Ministry of Water Resources had filed several lawsuits against parties responsible for polluting the Tigris and Diyala rivers, adding that the ministry had won the cases and referred them for enforcement, but the rulings had not been implemented on the ground.

He said the current level of pollution was inconsistent with the substantial amounts of money spent on wastewater and sewage treatment projects.

Al-Tamimi added that a joint inspection carried out by the Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Environment to identify sources of pollution would be followed by the submission of a report to the prime minister, who would be asked to take swift action against the sides responsible for the pollution.
