Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday expressed concern over continued tensions and developments affecting maritime security in the region.
In a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the ministry said it was concerned about “the continuation of tensions and developments affecting the security of maritime navigation in the region, and the potential repercussions that could impact regional security and stability, as well as international trade flows.”
The ministry stressed the importance of adhering to the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter, respecting states’ sovereignty and good-neighborly relations, and refraining from any actions that could escalate tensions or threaten the security and safety of maritime navigation.
The statement added that the Republic of Iraq “reaffirms the need to respect the sovereignty of states and refrain from actions that undermine their security and stability, in a manner that contributes to strengthening regional security and enhancing mutual trust among the countries of the region.”
The ministry called for the adoption of dialogue and diplomatic means to address disputes, while reaffirming Iraq’s support for all efforts aimed at de-escalation, preserving regional security and stability, and safeguarding the shared interests of the region’s peoples.
