The Commander of the Iraqi Border Forces, Lieutenant General Mohammed Abdul Wahab Sikar, emphasized to his Syrian counterpart, Brigadier General Hassan Abdul Ghani, on Monday, the importance of joint efforts to secure the shared border.
“Al-Qaim border region witnessed today the first border meeting between the Republic of Iraq and the Syrian Arab Republic, attended by Lieutenant General Sikar and Brigadier General Hassan Abdul Ghani, as well as his accompanying delegation, along with several relevant commanders and officers from both sides,” said the Ministry of Interior in a press release received by the Iraqi News Agency - INA.
During the meeting, mechanisms for strengthening cooperation and joint coordination between the border forces of the two countries were discussed, as well as ”ways to enhance the exchange of information, which contributes to confronting security challenges that may affect the security and stability of the shared border regions.”
The Commander of the Border Forces emphasized "the importance of the two countries joining forces to secure their shared border," noting that "this meeting laid the foundation for a set of understandings to enhance security and stability along the border strip between the two countries."
In turn, the Commander of the Syrian Arab Republic's Border Guards affirmed that "the meeting yielded positive results that will contribute to increasing the level of border control, as well as opening rapid and flexible communication channels between field commanders on both sides, thus strengthening joint coordination and supporting the security of the two brotherly countries."
