The Minister of Water Resources, Muthanna al-Tamimi, emphasized on Monday the importance of taking urgent measures to address pollution sources in the Tigris River.
The ministry stated in a press release received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that "the Minister of Water Resources, Muthanna al-Tamimi, accompanied by the Minister of Environment, Sarwa Abdul Wahid, conducted a field visit to the river in the Jadriya-Dora area, with the participation of several senior ministry officials, engineers, and other relevant personnel, to monitor the sources of government-generated pollutants flowing into the Tigris River and assess the situation firsthand."
The statement added that "the visit included inspecting the sites of pollutant discharges, monitoring their impact on the environmental and water resources, and reviewing the measures taken to address this phenomenon, in order to protect the Tigris River, preserve water quality, and enhance the efficiency of the water system."
During the visit, the minister stressed "the importance of taking urgent measures to address all sources of pollution and coordinating with relevant authorities to stop environmental violations," emphasizing that "protecting waterways and preserving water quality is a shared national responsibility, in line with the government's directives to protect the environment and water resources."
