UN chief and Iran foreign minister hold phone call on regional situation

António Guterres expressed his sympathies with the Iranian nation and government as the country prepares for the farewell and funeral rites of the assassinated supreme leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, IRNA reported.

During this telephone conversation, IRNA reported, the two sides exchanged views on regional and international developments, particularly the situation in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

Iranian Ambassador to the UN Amir-Saeid Iravani said on Thursday that US military bases in the Gulf states have brought “nothing but instability” to the region, in remarks delivered during an emergency session of the Security Council.

“The US has no coastal border in our region. It is not their waters. It is not their neighbourhood,” Iravani said.

He pointed out the hypocrisy of Security Council members blaming Tehran for violence and instability in the region whilst ignoring the role of the US and Israel.
