Confessions by former Oil MinistryUndersecretary Adnan al-Jumaili led to the arrest of a senior official atIraq's South Refineries Company (SRC) in Basra, a security source told ShafaqNews on Tuesday.
The source identified the detaineeas Muntaser Kazem Haloub, assistant director-general of the SRC and owner ofTAAM Engineering Company, attributing the arrest to al-Jumaili's statements in an ongoing financialcorruption investigation.
Iraqi authorities launched thenationwide Dawn Crackdown anti-corruption campaign on June 28 under PM Ali Al-Zaidi'sdirection. A security source told Shafaq News that the number of arrestsexceeded 67 during the first 24 hours, while informed sources said the initialphase is expected to target more than 200 current and former officials,politicians, business owners, and other suspects.
On Sunday, an Iraqi investigativejudge said the probe into al-Jumaili had uncovered the involvement of severalIraqi lawmakers in exploiting state resources and benefiting from governmentcontracts.
