Iraqi Court Issues Life Sentence for Drug Trafficking in Basra

The Basra Criminal Court issued a life sentence today, Tuesday, against a drug dealer.

The Judicial Council stated in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that "the Basra Criminal Court issued a life sentence against a drug dealer for the crime of trafficking in narcotics."

It added that "the convicted man was apprehended in possession of 1.5 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine and hashish, with the intent to traffic and sell them to users."

It noted that "the sentence was issued against him based on the provisions of Article 27/First of the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Law No. 50 of 2017." In a separate statement, the Judicial Council explained that "the Diyala Criminal Court sentenced three individuals to ten years in prison for embezzling funds allocated for compensation to the families of martyrs and those wounded in terrorist attacks."

The statement added that "the convicts embezzled these funds by exploiting their positions in the Diyala Governorate office, through the issuance of 301 fraudulent checks and the transfer of funds from the compensation account to the governorate office's operational advances account."

The statement further indicated that "the sentences were issued against them based on Article 315/Section Two of the Penal Code, in conjunction with Articles 47, 48, and 49 concerning complicity."
