Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said on Sunday that Iraq is ready to host Gulf states to discuss regional security and ways to end the war, stressing that the security of the region should be the responsibility of its peoples.

Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said during a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, attended by an Iraq News Agency (INA) correspondent that Araghchi’s visit to Iraq carries significant importance, particularly after the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

He noted that the war in the region is still ongoing, with military skirmishes taking place at the edges of the Strait of Hormuz.

He added that he discussed a number of issues of mutual concern with Araghchi, including Iraq’s exposure to several attacks during the recent war, as well as the impact of any closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which would halt Iraqi oil flows and affect the country’s financial and economic situation.

He called for convening a meeting bringing together the Gulf Arab states, Iraq and Iran, affirming that Iraq is ready to host Gulf countries to discuss regional security and ways to end the war. He stressed that the security of the region should be the responsibility of its peoples, and that ending the war in the region is a priority for all.

He expressed regret over Iran’s exposure to attacks by the United States, noting that Iraq’s policy is fundamentally based on rejecting war and resolving problems through dialogue.

He noted that Iraq played an important role in reaching an agreement between Washington and Tehran, stressing that Iraq maintains excellent relations with both the United States and Iran and is ready to work with both sides to help bring the war to an end.

The foreign minister also expressed his thanks to his Iranian counterpart, saying he had been regularly informing Iraq of developments in the negotiations.
