Baghdad, Damascus advance water coordination with new protocol

Iraq and Syria signed a jointprotocol on Thursday to enhance coordination on shared water resources, the IraqiWater Resources Ministry announced, describing it as part of the country'sefforts to safeguard its rights.

During a bilateral meeting inBaghdad, Iraqi Water Resources Ministry Technical Undersecretary Hussein AbdulAmir Bakka and Syrian Deputy Energy Minister for Water and Electricity OsamaKhaled Abu Zaid stressed the importance of maintaining direct technicaldialogue, exchanging expertise, and improving coordination and follow-upmechanisms for managing shared water resources.

On Wednesday, Abu Zaid told ShafaqNews that Syria and Iraq were also working to revive a trilateral technicalcommittee with Turkiye to address declining water flows and deteriorating waterquality after years of reduced water releases lowered water levels in theTigris and Euphrates rivers.
