Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau announced that the U.S. administration remains in contact with Caracas in the aftermath of the earthquake and is preparing to provide assistance to Venezuela.

In a post on X, Landau said: “The United States stands in solidarity with the people of Venezuela following the devastating earthquakes that struck the country this evening. We are in contact with the authorities and are working to provide assistance.”

Venezuela was struck by an earthquake on the evening of June 24, with two seismic events recorded. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the first earthquake measured 7.1 magnitude and occurred approximately 160 kilometres west of Caracas. It was followed less than a minute later by a stronger 7.5-magnitude quake.

The agency warned of the possibility of “significant casualties and severe damage,” indicating in preliminary estimates that the death toll could range between 10,000 and 100,000 people. No official casualty figures have been released so far.
