The Ministry of Foreign Affairs-MOFA on Monday welcomed the appointment of Nabil Fahmy as Secretary-General of the League of Arab States.
According to a statement issued by MOFA, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), "The Republic of Iraq welcomes the decision adopted by the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level during its 165th ordinary session, held in the Jordanian capital, Amman, to appoint Nabil Fahmy as Secretary-General of the League of Arab States for a five-year term beginning on July 1, 2026, by consensus of the member states and under a mandate from Arab leaders."
The ministry also reaffirmed Iraq's aspiration to work closely with the new Secretary-General in a manner that would contribute to strengthening joint Arab action, enhancing mechanisms for cooperation and coordination among Arab states, and supporting efforts aimed at achieving security, stability and development across the region.
The ministry also extended its sincere appreciation and gratitude to former Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, in recognition of his efforts and contributions to advancing Arab causes and strengthening the role of the Arab League during his tenure.
It further noted that Iraq, as one of the founding members of the League of Arab States, reaffirms its commitment to supporting the League and its institutions, as well as its determination to play an active role in promoting Arab solidarity and advancing the common interests of Arab states and peoples.
