Kurdistan Region Interior Minister Rebar Ahmed said on Saturday that the federal government had pledged to provide security guarantees for oil companies operating in the region. He also called for the allocation of necessary budgets to address the refugee file.

Ahmed said during a press conference held after his participation in the World Refugee Day ceremony, attended by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Ziyadi pledged to guarantee the security of investment companies, following a visit by a committee from the General Staff, upon his directive, and in coordination with the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, Masrour Barzani.

He added that an agreement had been reached to provide security guarantees for oil companies operating in the region, in response to the companies’ demands.

He added that the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government are working jointly on air defense systems and the protection of oil companies operating in the Kurdistan Region.

In the case of refugees, Ahmed called on the government to fulfil its commitments and allocate the necessary budgets to address the refugee issue.

He also urged the international community and the United Nations not to reduce aid, but rather to invest in strengthening refugees’ resilience, stressing that humanitarian responsibility must be shared and not placed solely on the host community.

He noted that the Sinjar Agreement has not yet been implemented despite the passage of many years since the genocide committed against the Yazidis, stressing the need to create appropriate conditions for the dignified return of displaced persons to their areas through the provision of security and reconstruction.

Ahmed stressed that “the doors of the Kurdistan Region will remain open to all those seeking peace and security, and that the regional government will continue to fulfil its humanitarian mission.”
