The General Authority of Customs announced on Monday the entry of the first transit shipment under the (TIR) system through the Rabia border crossing, noting that activating the system enhances Iraq’s position as a regional trade corridor.
The Director of the Authority, Thamer Qasim Dawood, stated in a statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “The entry of the first transit shipment under the (TIR) system through the Rabia border crossing, coming from the Syrian Arab Republic towards the sisterly State of Kuwait, represents an important step in the path of developing the international transport and transit sector, and reflects the continuous successes achieved by the General Authority of Customs in activating international agreements and enhancing Iraq’s position on the regional and international trade map.”
It pointed out that "this achievement confirms the readiness of the Iraqi border crossings to receive and manage transit operations in accordance with approved international systems and standards, especially with the adoption of modern tracking systems (GPS) that provide high levels of control and efficiency and contribute to facilitating the movement of goods and the smooth flow of their transfer across Iraqi territory."
It noted the ongoing efforts to develop the customs work environment and expand the application of the TIR system, in line with the government's directives to strengthen trade ties with countries in the region and transform Iraq into an effective economic corridor linking regional and international markets.
It commended the efforts of the staff working at the Rabia border crossing, the Transit Division, and the supporting departments within the authority, which contributed to the successful completion of this operation, thus enhancing confidence in Iraqi border crossings and supporting international trade and transport through the country.
