The General Directorate for Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Affairs announced on Sunday the dismantling of an international drug trafficking network and the seizure of 200 kilograms of narcotics during operations conducted inside Syrian territory.

The directorate said in a statement that, acting on precise intelligence and in direct coordination with Syria’s anti-narcotics authorities, its units carried out a series of simultaneous operations deep inside Syria over several days.

The operations, supported by intensive intelligence and field efforts, were conducted in the provinces of Deir al-Zor and Homs, the statement said.

According to the directorate, the operation resulted in the dismantling of an international network comprising nine major drug traffickers and the seizure of 200 kilograms of various narcotic substances that had been prepared for smuggling into Iraq for distribution and sale.

The statement added that intelligence coordination and cooperation between the anti-narcotics agencies of the two countries reached a high level during the operation as part of joint efforts to disrupt smuggling routes, cut off supply lines used by international drug trafficking networks and apprehend key figures involved in the trade, in order to protect society from the dangers posed by narcotics.
