Iran has launched  a wave of attacks on US military bases across the Middle East on Wednesday, targeting facilities in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan in retaliation for American strikes near the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, the country's top joint military command, said the attacks were launched in response to US "aggression in southern Iran".

In a statement carried by Iranian state media, the military command warned that "heavier and broader" attacks would follow if Washington continued military operations against Iran.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, as well as military facilities in Kuwait and Jordan.

It also claimed the operation struck 21 US targets across the region, including air and naval facilities.

Videos seen by Middle East Eye appeared to show a flash of light near a US military facility in Bahrain during the attacks.

The US, however, downplayed the effectiveness of the strikes, with an official telling the Financial Times that Bahrain and Kuwait were subject to multiple Iranian missiles and drone strikes but there was no indication that Tehran had successfully struck its intended targets.

The official also said there was no evidence that a US military facility in Jordan had been hit.

US officials have previously downplayed the effectiveness of Iranian attacks on their interests only for media reports to later reveal extensive damage.

Jordanian authorities said their air-defence systems intercepted several incoming projectiles, while officials in Bahrain and Kuwait activated emergency measures as air raid warnings sounded across parts of the Gulf.

The attacks came hours after the United States launched what it called "self-defence strikes" on Iranian military infrastructure in response to the downing of an American Apache helicopter over the strategic waterway.

Explosions were reported across several Iranian locations, including Qeshm Island, Bandar Abbas, Jask and Sirik, according to local media.

The IRGC said the US attacks damaged a telecommunications tower in the coastal city of Sirik and destroyed two water-storage tanks.

US officials said the targets were selected to reduce Iran's ability to threaten international shipping and US military assets operating in the Gulf.
