Fayhan: Environmental Issues Are a Fundamental Pillar of Sustainable Development and Community Security

First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Adnan Fayhan stressed on Monday the need to intensify efforts to address environmental pollution.

According to a statement issued by his media office and received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Fayhan met with Minister of Environment Sarwa Abdul Wahid at his guesthouse to discuss the most pressing environmental challenges facing the country and ways to strengthen government measures aimed at mitigating their impact. The meeting also reviewed mechanisms for coordination and integration between the legislative and executive branches to ensure the implementation of environmental plans and programs within specific timelines.

Fayhan emphasized that environmental issues constitute one of the fundamental pillars of sustainable development and community security due to their direct connection to the future of coming generations. He underscored the importance of intensifying efforts to tackle environmental pollution, particularly in oil-producing provinces, while addressing the challenges of desertification, drought, and water scarcity.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting national policies and plans aimed at environmental protection, including the development of environmental legislation and the promotion of the sustainable management of natural resources.

For her part, Environment Minister Sarwa Abdul Wahid praised the First Deputy Speaker’s attention to environmental issues and his commitment to monitoring the challenges facing this vital sector.

She expressed the ministry’s determination to continue coordination and cooperation with Parliament and its specialized committees in order to strengthen legislative and oversight frameworks that support environmental programs.
