The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today, Tuesday, that Iraq has been elected as Vice-President of the United Nations General Assembly for its 81st session.
In a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the Ministry stated that "the United Nations General Assembly elected Iraq as Vice-President of the 81st session during elections held at the UN headquarters in New York."
"This election reflects the confidence that Iraq enjoys within the United Nations and the international community, and the appreciation for its efforts in supporting South-South and triangular cooperation through its facilitating role in this field. This has contributed to strengthening consensus among developing countries and defending their priorities within the United Nations, and has reinforced its position as an active partner in advancing the development agenda and international cooperation."
"Iraq, through this position, looks forward to contributing effectively to supporting the United Nations' efforts to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, participating in developing and enhancing the efficiency of the General Assembly's working methods, in addition to enhancing Iraq's role and standing on the international stage."
"This achievement is a result of the balanced and moderate foreign policy pursued by the Iraqi government and the diplomatic efforts led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in coordination with the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in New York."
According to the statement "Iraq's election as Vice-President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly is a significant diplomatic achievement that enhances its position within the United Nations system and underscores its growing role in supporting dialogue and international cooperation and consolidating the principles of multilateral action."
