The Iraqi Football Association (IFA) announced on Wednesday the cancellation of the remaining matches of the Iraq Cup competition for the current season.
In a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the association expressed its “sincere appreciation and gratitude to Iraqi sports fans and all participating clubs for the high level of cooperation and national spirit shown throughout the current season,” noting that this had contributed to the success of the competition despite a congested schedule and continuous commitments.
The association said that, “out of its commitment to providing the best conditions for the preparation of the various national teams, the Iraqi Football Association has decided to cancel the remaining matches of the Iraq Cup competition for the current season.”
It explained that the decision was taken due to the Iraqi national team’s participation in the FIFA World Cup finals, in addition to a training camp scheduled for the Olympic team in Turkey, which requires most players to be fully available during the coming period.
The statement added that, as part of efforts to develop domestic competitions and launch the upcoming season in a modern format that meets the aspirations of Iraqi football fans, the association is working on introducing a new Super Cup tournament with a different format, which it said would mark a distinctive start to the next football season in line with development plans and the professional organization of competitions.
The Iraqi Football Association affirmed that the coming period would witness early and comprehensive preparations for organizing next season’s competitions in a better manner from organizational, technical, and marketing perspectives, in a way that fulfills the expectations of Iraqi football supporters and strengthens the standing of local tournaments.
