Defense Ministry Announces Rescue of Iraqi Fishermen from Drowning Near Basra Oil Port

The Ministry of Defense announced on Monday the rescue of Iraqi fishermen from drowning near the Basra Oil Port.

In a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the ministry said that the Naval Forces Command responded to a distress call after a fishing vessel carrying several Iraqi fishermen began sinking near the Basra Oil Port.

The statement added that, under direct orders from the Army Chief of Staff, patrol boat (P-310), assigned to protection duties within the Ship-to-Ship (STS) loading area, and immediately moved to the scene upon receiving the report. The crew successfully located the fishing vessel’s crew and rescued the four Iraqi fishermen on board from drowning.

The ministry noted that first aid was administered to the injured fishermen and their safety was confirmed. It added that the Naval Forces Command stressed that the response falls within its humanitarian and operational duties to ensure maritime security and conduct search and rescue operations within its area of responsibility, in order to safeguard citizens’ lives and maritime navigation safety.
