The Ministry of Environment confirmed on Friday that the use of plastic bags poses an environmental and economic burden on the country, noting that Iraq produces approximately 16,000 tons of plastic waste daily.
Ministry spokesperson Luay al-Mukhtar told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "The decision taken in the first cabinet meeting to reduce reliance on free shopping bags in malls, butcher shops, and bakeries is an important decision from three perspectives: health, environment, and economy."
He added, "Plastic bags are polymer materials that withstand various conditions and do not decompose quickly, but they also contain materials known as microplastics, as well as added chemicals such as dyes, plasticizers, and colors. Some of these materials may be toxic and dangerous."
He explained that "some plastic products, especially recycled ones, have the potential to leach chemicals into food, particularly with temperature variations, causing multiple health risks that may include cancer, in addition to affecting the body's organs and nervous system."
He noted that "the Ministry calls for reducing the use of plastic materials that come into contact with food and water, such as packaging materials, water bottles, and single-use items, due to their negative effects on public health."
