U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that Chinese President Xi Jinping agrees with him on the need to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

In remarks carried by Fox News, Trump said the Taiwan issue remains “the top priority” for Xi Jinping since he has known him for 12 years.

He added that China would not dare take any action against Taiwan during his time in office, while warning that some inside Taiwan are pushing for independence, which he described as dangerous.

Trump said he believes China could take action on Taiwan if he were not in office, noting that Xi has been “very kind” in his handling of the Iran file and the Strait of Hormuz.

He also said he told Beijing that Washington does not need any assistance regarding Iran or securing navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, adding that China depends on the strait for around 40% of its oil supplies.

Trump reiterated that Xi agrees with him that Iran must not possess nuclear weapons.
