Hackers have breached fuel tank monitoring systems serving gas stations across the United States, with U.S. officials suspecting Iran may be behind the activity, according to CNN.
CNN reported that U.S. officials suspect Iranian hackers were behind a series of intrusions targeting systems used to monitor fuel quantities in storage tanks at gas stations in several states, citing multiple sources familiar with the activity.
According to the report, the hackers exploited automatic tank gauge (ATG) systems connected to the internet without password protection, allowing them in some cases to manipulate displayed tank readings, though not the actual fuel levels.
The cyber intrusions are not known to have caused physical damage or injuries, but they have raised safety concerns because access to ATG systems could theoretically allow fuel leaks to go undetected, according to private-sector experts and U.S. officials.
