Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani affirmed on Sunday Iraq's desire to cooperate with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to return the detainees who were handed over by Syria to their countries of origin.

The Prime Minister's Media Office stated in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani met on Sunday with the President of the ICRC, Mirjana Spoljaric-Egger, and her accompanying delegation, in the presence of the Undersecretary Minister of Foreign Affairs for Multilateral Affairs and specialized advisors.

The meeting addressed the situation in the region, the crises caused by wars and conflicts, and the resulting humanitarian needs. Al-Sudani emphasized Iraq's appreciation for the ICRC's outstanding efforts in providing emergency aid and assistance.

Al-Sudani, according to the statement, pointed to “Iraq’s position in supporting international organizations to address the effects of conflicts,” indicating “the desire to cooperate with the International Red Cross to return detainees who were received from Syria to their countries, and the importance of pushing the countries concerned to abide by this decision.”

For her part, Egger affirmed that “Iraq’s cooperation with the Red Cross is a good example within the framework of laws protecting civilians and human rights,” and expressed the desire to complete the bilateral cooperation coordination agreement, and her appreciation for Iraq’s position on receiving non-Iraqi detainees, stressing the need to work seriously to return them to their countries and bring them to justice.
