The General Company for Iraqi Ports announced on Saturday the inauguration of the submerged tunnel for vehicles under the Khor Al-Zubair Canal, linking the Um Qasr and Faw areas in Basra Governorate, confirming that the project has reached over 95% completion.
The company's Director General, Farhan Al-Fartousi, said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "The submerged tunnel is now fully ready for vehicle traffic, and what remains of the project pertains only to the final technical touches." He noted that "this achievement represents a historic moment in the development of strategic projects in the country."
Al-Fartousi added that "the Faw Port project is the gateway to the major economic project that extends for 1,200 kilometers to the Iraqi-Turkish border," explaining that "this road extends across all of Iraq's governorates and has high flexibility to accommodate future investments thanks to the vast areas allocated for expansion."
He affirmed that "these areas and expansions will become operational during the current year," noting that "the project is not limited to being a transport corridor, but is a fundamental pillar for sustainable economic development that connects the southern ports to the international borders."
