The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Thursday it had intercepted Iranian attacks on U.S. destroyers transiting from the Strait of Hormuz toward the Gulf of Oman and responded with defensive strikes.

In a statement followed by the Iraqi News Agency-INA, CENTCOM said that U.S. forces had “intercepted unprovoked Iranian attacks and responded with defensive strikes” while U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyers were passing through the Strait of Hormuz en route to the Gulf of Oman on May 7.

It added that Iranian forces launched several missiles, drones and small boats during the passage of the USS Truxtun (DDG 103), USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115) and USS Mason (DDG 87) through the international waterway. It said no U.S. assets were hit.

CENTCOM said it destroyed incoming threats and targeted Iranian military facilities responsible for attacks on U.S. forces, including missile and drone launch sites, command and control locations, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance nodes.

It added that it does not seek escalation but remains positioned and ready to protect U.S. forces.
