US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Tuesday that Washington will introduce a draft resolution at the United Nations Security Council aimed at safeguarding freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

In remarks at a press conference, Rubio said: “The United States will present a draft resolution to the Security Council to defend freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” noting that Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Bahrain participated in drafting the proposal.

He added that the draft resolution calls on Iran to halt attacks, the laying of mines, and the collection of fees in the Strait of Hormuz.

Rubio further said the resolution urges Iran to disclose the number and locations of mines it has deployed in the strait and to assist in their removal.

He also called on Iran to return to the negotiating table and accept the terms under discussion, saying diplomatic efforts are being actively pursued.
