The White House was briefly placed on lockdown on May 4 after a nearby shooting involving a law enforcement officer.

The shooting prompted the Secret Service to order reporters on the North Lawn of the White House to go inside to the press briefing room. After the lockdown was lifted, President Donald Trump hosted an event in the White House East Room where he addressed small business owners as originally planned. The event started about 45 minutes late.

The Secret Service said in a statement at 4:10 p.m. ET that personnel were on the scene of an officer-involved shooting at 15th Street and Independence Avenue, which is at the National Mall close to the Washington Monument, a few blocks away from the White House.
