Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani on Monday called for establishing a diplomatic alliance that includes countries of the region and the European Union to stop the war.

The Prime Minister’s Media Office said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that Al-Sudani participated on Monday, via videoconference, in the conference called for by the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission regarding the current regional developments, with the participation of leaders and officials from Arab and foreign countries.

During his address at the conference, the Prime Minister affirmed that the ongoing war in the region requires a strong and unified position to stop it, and to prioritize dialogue and cooperation in order to prevent further escalation of a situation that constitutes a serious threat to international peace and security.

Al-Sudani stressed the rejection of war and aggression, as well as attempts to drag Iraq into the conflict, noting that resorting to violence without the cover of international legitimacy and outside the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council represents a recipe for the transformation into a major regional conflict.

He called for establishing a diplomatic alliance that includes countries of the region and countries of the European Union aimed at the immediate cessation of the war, stressing the necessity of halting violations of state sovereignty, out of concern for the security of the region, the principle of good neighborliness, and adherence to the United Nations Charter.

Al-Sudani said in his address: “We condemn the attacks that have occurred on Iraqi territory by all parties, and reaffirm our rejection of war and aggression in all its forms,” noting that “Iraq’s position remains firm in rejecting the use of its territory or airspace to carry out attacks or military operations against neighboring countries.”

He added: “We condemn the attacks against the Islamic Republic of Iran, its sovereignty, security, stability, and territorial integrity,” noting: “We reject violations of the sovereignty of brotherly Arab countries and reaffirm our solidarity with their measures to protect the integrity of their territory and their people.”

He continued: “We call for ending violations of state sovereignty, sparing civilians the scourge of conflicts, adopting the principle of good neighborliness, and adhering to the Charter of the United Nations. We also condemn the repeated attacks by the Israeli occupation on the territory of brotherly Lebanon and the violation of its sovereignty, as it constitutes a blatant breach of international law and conventions.”

He added: “We emphasize prioritizing dialogue and diplomatic means, and unifying Arab and Islamic ranks to contain the repercussions and safeguard Arab national security. We also We reaffirm the sanctity of diplomatic missions and strongly condemn the targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure, including oil and nuclear facilities.”

He pointed out that the continuation of such attacks will complicate efforts to reach a ceasefire, prolong the conflict, and exacerbate its suffering, stressing The United Nations General Assembly must adopt a resolution to stop the war, and the Security Council must fulfill its responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security.
